Counting Down to Day 20 (Day 109 out of 129) of the Middle Path Makeover – Waiting For Greener Grass

Many of us wait our whole lives for something more: a more important job, a nicer car, better vacations, 2.2 kids and a house with a white picket fence, a different spouse, skinnier thighs, more hair… we’ve all heard the story. For me, the times when I finally got the greener grass turned out to be something I rarely even wanted or needed- I just thought I did because someone else thought it was greater than sliced bread.

And what is so great about the other side when fewer and fewer folks are really appreciating anything that they have anyway? Good question, right? BUT, if I can remember that thoughts are just things (and I’m the one giving these thoughts their meanings), then the only thing between me and greener pastures is me.

What are we waiting for?? Whether or not it’s within our grasp in this moment isn’t important. Most things in life are impermanent. Appreciate it all right now. 🙂

Counting Down to Day 21 (Day 108 out of 129) of the Middle Path Makeover – Awake

Pick the teacup up. Sip the tea. Taste the tea. Swallow the tea. Set the teacup down. Breathe. Repeat.
Listen to the birds sing. Listen to the refrigerator hum. Listen to the water run. Listen to the floor boards creak. Listen to the sounds. Breathe. Repeat.
Listen to the thoughts that come and go, arguments, laughter, stressful sounds of yelling, softer sounds of breathing. They are all just thoughts and sounds. We are the ones that give them meaning. Allow your mind to quiet and wake up!

Counting Down to Day 34 (Day 95 out of 129) of the Middle Path Makeover – Broken Pieces…

Broken pieces can make for beautiful mosaics. If something is broken, it might in fact be your perspective that is broken. Before giving up or throwing the pieces away, try changing your perspective. If that doesn’t work try some crazy glue. 🙂

Keep on keepin’ on and keep it fresh,

Counting Down to Day 35 (Day 94 out of 129) of the Middle Path Makeover – It’s the Little Things

When you’ve done something a very long time, it can eventually become difficult to find enjoyment in it. So I look for the small pleasures. Discovering humor in the idiosyncracies of life can be fun!

I often laugh at my thoughts when meditating some really bizarre shit comes up. It’s been nearly twelve years since I started my practice and although I’ve gained far more awareness along the way, some days sitting on my cushion can still be just as frustrating as it was years ago when I was just starting out.

Sometimes it’s helpful to go back to the basic techniques. The reinforcement of foundation can be refreshing and often I find it brings new perspective. It does require discipline but it can be really valuable.

And so I notice the little things. I really (try) and see them. Appreciate them for what they are and also what they aren’t.

Keep on keepin’ on and keep appreciating the small stuff,
