Hey Zenful Dancers, Yogis and other fine folks!
I just want to set the record straight about this whole NY Times scareyoga article: The problem isn’t yoga. The responsibility lies with the practitioner. Just like any other class or course you may take, there are (in every category) great teachers and shitty ones. The question is: are you going to be a great student or a shitty one? And what I mean by that is, are you going to make the time to find the right teacher for you, for your body, for your spirit?
It’s your responsibility to realize any injuries and/or weakness and it’s your responsibility to communicate that to your teacher. Are you the type to let your ego run your class for you? If so, you will hurt yourself. Without a doubt, it will happen if not now, eventually. Are you the type to let your teacher walk (sometimes literally) all over you? If so, you will get hurt. Go slow and at your own pace. Realize your boundaries. Stretching yourself is very different from causing pain and damage to yourself, both literally and metaphorically speaking. Be kind to yourself and always remember to BREATHE! Yoga can be wonderful for so many reasons!
Keep on keepin’ on and be good to yourself,
